Read the reviews in small magazines that cover out of the way books and music.
That said, my knowledge of good movies expanded greatly in the much-mourned days of Netflix DVD; their recommendations pointed me to dozens of movies I wouldn’t have known about otherwise. As for Amazon and Spotify, I agree completely with the writer.
