I finished Camus’ The Plague. What a book.

I’ve read various speculations about it being an allegory for one thing or another, or an ‘existentialist’ manifesto in fictional garb. I think it’s simpler and cleaner than that. The message, if there is one (great books don’t have to have messages), is that every choice we make in life is a choice in favor of death or of life and healing. It’s not possible to keep our hands entirely clean, but our responsibility is, as best we can, to make the choice for healing.

If you ever plan to read this book, and I hope you do, our current anxious atmosphere is a perfect background.
