I ordered a vegetarian Chinese cookbook that turned out to be mostly disappointing at the recipe level. But it included some thoughts about meat-eating that struck me. Usually, ethical arguments for veganism appeal in various ways to our (existing) compassion. In a thought-provoking reversal, a line in this book said that avoiding meat will make us more compassionate – something we could all use.
